Mohanlal - Most Popular Keralite 2011 Survey By Deccan Chronicle.

The youth of Kerala may prefer oldies to make way for the younger lot in politics, but in films they still dote on two middle-aged superstars — Mohanlal and Mammootty.

Mohanlal - 29%
Mammootty - 23%
Prithviraj - 20%
Dileep - 5%
Jayaram - 4%
Asif Ali - 2%
Kunchacko, Vineeth Srinivasan etc - 1%

These two stars, who have been ruling the roost from the mid-1980s are the heartthrobs of the new generation too, according to the Deccan Chronicle C-fore survey conducted among youth aged from 18 to 25.

And among the two ‘Big Ms,’ Mohanlal has an edge over Mammootty with 29 per cent of the youth terming him the most popular actor.
Mammootty comes next with 23 per cent plumping for him.
Among Mohanlal fans, the majority are males (38 percent) and females constitute only a moderate chunk (19 per cent) in comparison.

At the same time, adorers of Mammootty are almost equally matched in gender with males comprising 24 per cent and females 22 percent. This jells with a popular survey held two years ago in which women voted Mammootty as the sexiest star of Kerala.

Among the young crowd, only Prithviraj is able to more or less match the two ageing superstars with 20 per cent of the respondents cheering for him. Of this, only 10 per cent are men and 30 per cent are women, understandably so.

The middle-level actors get ‘moderate’ approval with 5 per cent endorsing Dileep and four per cent choosing Jayaram.

The outspoken Thilakan, who took out a fight with the superstars last year, also gets the approval of five per cent.

Interestingly, the new crop of actors — Kunjacko Boban, Jayasurya, Kailash, Ajmal Ameer and Vineeth Sreenivasan — get lukewarm response from the youth. Only one per cent of respondents felt enthusiastic about them. Asif Ali is slightly better at two per cent but that is no consolation.

“The Kerala youth identify with younger stars of Bollywood and not those of Malayalam films,” said the well-known film critic, Mr C.S. Venkiteswaran.

“They don’t think the younger stars of Kerala are hep enough.”

Mr Venkiteswaran also felt that the popularity of Mammootty and Mohanlal among the youth had more to do with their absolute dominance of television which created the ambience for film viewing. “The young actors are not getting the space they deserve because of this,” he said.

August 15 Movie Review

'August 15' is not up to mark

Shaji Kailas in his attempt to make a sequel (or can we call it a remake)to Sibi Malayil's twenty year old hit 'August 1', has managed to keep the feel of the original in its entire length, but the poor writing and lack of needed thrills  has made it a pale imitation of the original. The movie has Mammootty again in the role of Perumal, a senior officer with the Crime branch. He is now entrusted with the mission of finding the culprits behind the poisoning of the State Chief Minister Vasudevan,(Nedumudi Venu) who is now in a critical condition in hospital. The C M is in logger heads with the party secretary (Saikumar as a Pinarayi look alike) and also with the lottery and sand mafia. As with the original, there arrives the professional killer (this time, it is Siddhique) and the rest is predictable.

In the acting side, Mammootty as Perumal, the CBCID, looks good with sunglasses always on, and in the Royal Enfield shots. His slow motion walks accompanied with the loud BGM may appeal to the fans, but leaves nothing fresh for the actor to experiment on, though his war of words  with his superior officers and scene in the party secretary's house are well and good. Lalu Alex as his senior officer Peter Zachariah garners much of the applause for his comic timing .Siddhique is ok as the professional killer with a different look, but is nowhere near the feat achieved by Captain Raju in the original.Meghna Raj and Shwetha Menon as the lead female characters find more space in the posters of the movie than in the movie.

On the whole, 'August 15' may fare a little better than ' Drona 2010' but may not help Shaji Kailas or S N Swamy to bounce back with a hit.Prescribed only for the big fans of the megastar who still likes him walking handsome in slow motions and doing routine investigative stuffs.

Christian Brothers Movie Review

Christian Brothers - Goes the 'Twenty:20' way

Ace scriptwriters Uday K Thomas-Sibi K Thomas and senior director Joshy has faithfully repeated their trademark recipes that made the big hit 'Twenty:20' for their new multistarrer 'Christian Brothers'. And evidently the movie has turned out into a power packed entertainer with plenty of thrills, songs and other masala fares. The movie as expected presents its four heroes in their stylish avatars, voicing punchlines and engaging in well choreographed action sequences.
'Christian Brothers' has superstar Mohanlal as Christie alias 'Sherson', the elder brother of Jojy (Dileep), Jessy (Lakshmi Gopalaswamy) and Stella (Kaniha) who belongs to the wealthy and eminent Palamattam Tharavadu. Christie and Jojy but failed to be in the mould and interests of  their  famous father  Capt. Varghese Mappilai (Sai Kumar), the former turning into  a  police informer based in Mumbai, and the later opting out of priest hood after falling in  love with Meenakshi (Kavya Madhavan), the daughter of State home minister. The movie doesn't take time for a safe landing with issues addressed from the minute one, ranging from deals of land mafia, murder of upright village officer Kochuthoma (Jagathy Sreekumar), and the opponents led by Thampy (Vijayaraghavan) and his sons, including the I PS officer (Biju Menon), the kidnapping of Meenakshi and much more.
The only problem with the movie seems to be that it has nothing ground breakable about its plot and also its length which extends to a little more than three hours. But Siby K Thomas and Uday Krishna have deftly handled the complicated plot most of the time, with twists after twists coming up in every twenty minutes, of which some are predictable. Though some of the tracks remind you of Hindi and Tamil thrillers, the immense experience of director Joshy in doing justice to vintage formulas, manages to pull it off to a safe entertainer.

The later half appear a little dragging at times, though  the drama keeps you hooked and  viewers won't find the pace slackened in the most of the presentations. The technical aspects are also fine with Anil Nair' making some good visuals and  Deepak Dev' churning in some good songs, though the one that pops up in the later half seems misplaced and unwarranted...
In the acting side, the movie is embellished with fairly good performances, though it may appear customary for the regulars of masala flicks. Mohanlal has a perfect commercial opening in the New Year as Christie, with all traits of a superhero and admirable mannerisms. His dialogue delivery and action are as usual, fine. The movie has everything for the Lal fans to celebrate, except for an average introduction.
The other star who impresses much is Sureshgopi, in his regular avatar like his role of 'Twenty:20'.
Dileep repeats his  trademark act while Tamil star Sarath Kumar, though in a short role is effective. The heroines looks pretty but don't have much to do, though Kaniha appears to be the best among them. Sai Kumar, Vijayaraghavan, Suresh Krishna, Biju Menon, Devan and Jagathy Sreekumar are apt in their roles. Salim Kumar and Harisree Asokan try their best to create some fun but with limited success, while Suraj repeats his antics which fails to make the viewers merry.
'Christian Brothers' is a definite prescription for all lovers of heavy masala fares of Mollywood. At the box-office, 'Christian Brothers' will have a good opening  and may end up as 'more than a safer hit'  in days to come!

Yeh Faasley Movie Review

Aah, now this one could really have been better. This is what one ends up exclaiming as the concluding reels of 'Yeh Faasley' start running. Reason being that what seemed to be a really promising idea, as conveyed through intriguing promos, turns out to be something that wasn't fleshed out to the fullest. Ultimately what one ends up seeing is a movie that would have been better off had it been made as a tele-film or an hour long 'Saturday night suspense' kinda show for television.
To think of it, the premise of 'Yeh Faasley' (leave aside a really weak and an inconclusive/non-enticing title) was quite decent. A girl (Tena Desai) really close to her father (Anupam Kher) only to realise that he could possibly have been a murderer of her mother - now there haven't been stories on the same subject shown on the big screen in the past.
Of course the genre by itself isn't anything overtly original; after all there have been instances of such films made in the past when a close relative/friend is suspected of being a murderer. However when a first time director comes on board, in this case being Yogesh Mittal, you always have some good hopes that there would be some new story telling at least. Reason being that there are fresh ideas taking form all over the industry today (case in point being 'Tanu Weds Manu' that released recently). With the knack of making even common stories interesting by means of the way they are being told, even the common subjects start looking interesting on screen if presented well.
Unfortunately for 'Yeh Faasley' though, this isn't really the case as the film fumbles, especially due to the curse of the second half (which by the way is getting more and more troublesome in last couple of years especially). Hence, what starts off with a promise of an interesting tale only leads one to boredom as it progresses. Now that's particularly disappointing because in a suspense drama, one actually looks forward to the graph only going up as the story reaches it's culmination. It doesn't happen in case of 'Yeh Faasley' due to which as a audience you truly feel that if only there was more meat put into the written material, Yogesh would have managed to make the film half-interesting at the least.
Not that the film is a total let down though. Leaving aside the fact that you aren't quite engrossed with the tale, especially during it's latter moments, there are portions in the first half of the film which do bring you on the edge of the seat. Tena realising that there is something really wrong with her father, his aversion at not quite letting out the truth, their conversations that seem to be meeting abrupt ends, her own investigation as she comes across various people with whom her mother had interacted in the past, Kher being tried in the court of law - one does stay on with the characters here in the quest of 'right' v/s 'wrong'. However as stated earlier, for any suspense drama to work, there has to be a good enough culmination, something which turns out to be a weak link here.
Performances are good here though and that is one silver lining that ensures that 'Yeh Faasley' isn't an unbearable watch. Anupam Kher in a central role is quite good yet again and showcases that he deserves to be seen in more deserving parts. Tena is decent though one wonders how far would she go from here as in 'Yeh Faasley' she isn't seen as a quintessential leading lady. Pawan Malhotra is reliable as well while Rushad Rana is decent. Technically, the film is just average, whether in terms of production values, cinematography or music.
Over and above the fact that 'Yeh Faasley' isn't quite a film that makes it to the top of the must watch activities over the weekend, another factor that would severely hamper it's prospects is a near-to-nil promotion. With nothing known about the film and no one knowing if this film has even released, 'Yeh Faasley' would largely go unnoticed.

Tanu Weds Manu Movie Review & Story

Tanu weds Manu is an out and out romantic comedy. It starts with a high energy pace and the tempo is maintained well. The marriage process of a typical north Indian family is well portrayed with a touch of humor.

  • Madhavan as Manoj Sharma
  • Kangana Ranaut as Tanuja Trivedi
  • Jimmy Shergill as Raja
  • Deepak Dobriyal as Pappi
  • Eijaz Khan as Jassi
  • Swara Bhaskar as Payal
  • Ravi Kissen, Rajendra Gupta & K.K.Raina in other supporting roles

The movies story revolves around Manoj Sharma played by R.Madhavan, who is a simple Nri doctor coming back to India for his holiday. As soon as he lands he's taken to kanpur for meeting up with Tanuja Trivedi's(kangna Ranaut) family on prospects of a possible arranged marriage. Kangna plays the role of a arrogant happy go lucky girl who hates the idea of arranged marriage and so gets drunk before the meeting. Is Madhavan able to win Kangana's love and marry her regardless of the threat is what forms the end of the story.

R.Madhavan fits the role of a Nri doctor perfectly, so do Kangna as a arrogant happy go lucky girl and Jimmy Shergill as the tough guy. Ravi Kissen plays a cameo. The rest of the characters all paly their respective roles convincingly. Deepak Dobriyal as Pappi needs a special mention for his hilarious dialogues in the movie.
The music is in flow with the movie and the back ground score sets the mood well. The high energy bangra songs are a thing to watch out for.

Seedan: Tamil movie Review

Star-casts: Dhanush, Ananya, Krishna, Vivek, Ilavarasu, Ponvannan and others

Tamil Cinema usually follows a strange pattern – it looks for similar kind of movies when a filmmaker gives a movie of that genre. Subramaniam Siva made his debut directorial with a movie ‘Thiruda Thirudi’ that needs no introduction in Kollywood. It became instant hit amongst all centres. SS’ next movie ‘Pori’ dealt with an existing issue of real estate problems while his previous movie ‘Yogi’ was a remake of South African movie ‘Tsotsi’.
His fourth movie ‘Seedan’ is again a remake, this time he picks 2002 Malayalam movie ‘Nandanam’ that was a decorous entertainer starring Prithviraj, Navya Nair and Aravindan in lead roles.
The film revolves around an orphan girl Mahalakshmi (Ananya), who is raised as a daughter, in a rich family with the eldest member Amritham Paatti (Chemeen Sheela) treating with love and affection. Mahalakshmi, an ardent follower of Lord Murugan has a dream during early morning of marrying a young handsome guy. Later she is surprised to see him arrive at the house and he is none other the grandson Mano (Krishna). They fall in love with each other, but a shock awaits them as Mano’s mother Thangam (Suhasini) fixes his marriage with another her friend’s daughter. She is very distressed with this and gets infuriated with Lord Murugan, whom she worships persistently. A newly appointed cook Saravanan (Dhanush) enters the house and starts performing some miracles.

Who is he actually? What he is up to? You’ve got to watch these proceedings on the screen.
Don’t expect too much from this movie, especially from Dhanush. He isn’t the lead actor and appears only during the intermission point with an extended cameo. The first half of the movie is little sluggish with some light moments. It is more or less in the format of TV serial. Ananya gets more footage and performs well doing justice to her role. Newcomer Krishna has a long way to go. Vivek evokes laughter with his satirical comedies as a Fake God Man. Suhasini Manirathnam emotes best at place and so is versatile actress Chemeen Sheela.
Musical score by Dheena is okay with the song ‘Saravana Samayal’ standing out as the best number. The background score is too repetitive at places.

Cinematography is cool with soft shades while editing is also done neatly. There aren’t any big minuses for the film except the fact that the screenplay is little slower and may attract the family audiences, specifically female audiences.
‘Seedan’ is an effortful attempt from Subramaniam Siva as he tries penning a commendable screenplay and dialogues.
Verdict: Can watch it once

Vikrams next film "VEDI" to be released on July 15th

t’s not often that an actor gets to play the hero as well as the villan in the same film and ends up winning accolades for both the roles.  ‘Chiyaan’ Vikram, the unassuming star, has done just that by playing the hero or the title role in Maniratnam’s ‘Raavanan’ and playing a negative role in the same director’s Hindi version of the same film titled ‘Raavan’.

Vikram’s portrayal of Dev Pratap Singh in ‘ Raavan’ hasn’t gone unnoticed in Bollywood.  The actor is said to have been flooded with similar roles but is taking his own time to decide whether he should venture into Hindi films full time.  Meanwhile, the actor’s next Tamil film, to be directed by Boopathy Pandian (of ‘Devadhaiyai Kandein’ fame) and titled ‘Vedi’, is all set to go to floors on 15th July.

After his portrayal of a trigger-happy and upright cop in director Hari’s highly successful ‘Sami’ a few years ago, Vikram would again be donning the role of a police officer in ‘Vedi’.  Vikram’s heroine in the film would be Telugu hottie Ileana, who has been ruling the roost in Telugu films.

Readers might recall that Ileana, who has an hour-glass figure, debuted in Tamil films as heroine in the dud titled ‘Kedi’, which released a few years back and sank without a trace.  In fact, the other debutante in ‘Kedi’ was the now-popular Tamannaah, who played a negative role in ‘Kedi’.

Devi Sri Prasad would be composing music for ‘Vedi’, which also stars Kota Srinivasarao and Telugu comedian Brahmanandam in major roles.  Ravi Raja, father of actor Aadhi, is also playing an important role in the film.

Farhan Akhtar speaks about Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

By Subhash K. Jha

Date: February 19, 2011

Lately away from media focus, actor-director-singer-producer Farhan Akhtar speaks to Subhash K Jha

Do you get to spend enough time with your daughters?

How do you define 'enough'? They're happy children. The older one is a lot aware of what I do. She has begun to understand what I do. As of now she's more reactive to the music in my cinema. Even the younger one loves the Rock On music. Now both my daughters are into the music of Zoya's Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (ZNMD).

In 2010 you were directed by your sister Zoya in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (ZNMD). How was the experience?

Yeah, all of us-Zoya, Hrithik, Abhay, Katrina, Kalki and me…became this little commune travelling across Spain. We travelled a lot. Spain has everything from beaches to mountains. So far only Bollywood songs have been shot in Spain. There's a serious change in topography as you drive through. The important thing was for us to look like we belong to one group

All of you do look very Hispanic?

(Thinks) Come to think of it we do have a similar skin-tone and hair. And the Spanish crew was wonderful. What's most important is that we were working with like-minded people. We made sure every scene was fun. Abhay, Hrithik and I spent a lot of time together. We really had some serious fun. Hrithik I knew for a long time. Abhay I got to know during this film. He's a very cool guy.

ZNMD looks like the last part of your trilogy on male bonding after Dil Chahta Hai and Rock On?

Funny, you say that. And why the last? No, I don't have any major fascination with cinema on male bonding. Dil Chahta Hai is the only script I wrote on the theme. Gattu (Abhishek Kapoor) wrote Rock On a fab script about a rock band. Zoya's script for ZNMD is about three guys on the verge of making commitments in life.

Don't you think Abhishek Kapoor and Zoya were influenced by Dil Chahta Hai?

They never told me. I never asked them. I know both liked Dil Chahta Hai very much.

How was it being directing by your sister a second time?

In Zoya's Luck By Chance I was a sneaky social climber. In ZNMD it's a sea-change. I play this guy who for the longest time takes nothing seriously. I am not even rich and I don't pretend to be. I'm just happy being the way I am. I got to just let my hair down. Many moments in this film gave me a chance to have lots of fun. After Rock On, Luck By Chance and Kartik Calling Kartik which were all serious angst-laden characters in ZNMD I play a fun character.

So you had fun doing the film?

Not just me. All of us. It was the nature of the script. There was so much improvisation. There was only so much that could be put on paper. So yeah we did improvise. We participated in the Tomatino festival in Spain.

And a bull fight?

Let me clarify that once and for all. There's no bullfight in ZNMD. We had animal-rights organizations questioning us about it. We sent them a letter saying there was no such thing. We did participate in a Running With The Bulls festival. No bulls got injured in that. We shot it in a completely controlled environment. We plan to release it at the end of May.

What about your singing?

All three of us Hrithik, Abhay and I, have sung in ZNMD. It's a party situation. It seemed interesting to lend our own voices to our characters. It's turned out really really well. I am very excited. That's the only song I've sung in a movie this year. Otherwise I am constantly singing in real life. I was singing before this interview. I'll be singing after we're done.
