Star-casts: Dhanush, Ananya, Krishna, Vivek, Ilavarasu, Ponvannan and others
Tamil Cinema usually follows a strange pattern – it looks for similar kind of movies when a filmmaker gives a movie of that genre. Subramaniam Siva made his debut directorial with a movie ‘Thiruda Thirudi’ that needs no introduction in Kollywood. It became instant hit amongst all centres. SS’ next movie ‘Pori’ dealt with an existing issue of real estate problems while his previous movie ‘Yogi’ was a remake of South African movie ‘Tsotsi’.
His fourth movie ‘Seedan’ is again a remake, this time he picks 2002 Malayalam movie ‘Nandanam’ that was a decorous entertainer starring Prithviraj, Navya Nair and Aravindan in lead roles.
The film revolves around an orphan girl Mahalakshmi (Ananya), who is raised as a daughter, in a rich family with the eldest member Amritham Paatti (Chemeen Sheela) treating with love and affection. Mahalakshmi, an ardent follower of Lord Murugan has a dream during early morning of marrying a young handsome guy. Later she is surprised to see him arrive at the house and he is none other the grandson Mano (Krishna). They fall in love with each other, but a shock awaits them as Mano’s mother Thangam (Suhasini) fixes his marriage with another her friend’s daughter. She is very distressed with this and gets infuriated with Lord Murugan, whom she worships persistently. A newly appointed cook Saravanan (Dhanush) enters the house and starts performing some miracles.
Who is he actually? What he is up to? You’ve got to watch these proceedings on the screen.
Don’t expect too much from this movie, especially from Dhanush. He isn’t the lead actor and appears only during the intermission point with an extended cameo. The first half of the movie is little sluggish with some light moments. It is more or less in the format of TV serial. Ananya gets more footage and performs well doing justice to her role. Newcomer Krishna has a long way to go. Vivek evokes laughter with his satirical comedies as a Fake God Man. Suhasini Manirathnam emotes best at place and so is versatile actress Chemeen Sheela.
Musical score by Dheena is okay with the song ‘Saravana Samayal’ standing out as the best number. The background score is too repetitive at places.
Cinematography is cool with soft shades while editing is also done neatly. There aren’t any big minuses for the film except the fact that the screenplay is little slower and may attract the family audiences, specifically female audiences.
‘Seedan’ is an effortful attempt from Subramaniam Siva as he tries penning a commendable screenplay and dialogues.
Verdict: Can watch it once
