Living Together:Latest Malayalam movie(feb 2011) Review

Download All Songs(Living Together) In ZIP [Media Fire]

Fazil, who created some memorable blockbusters through the 1980’s and early 90's is unfortunately let down by his own script. Frankly, you have to watch it to know how bad a film is Living Together.
With a rather silly script that often amuses the viewer with its hollowness; the legendary director has made this highly forgettable film that completely fails to make any impression.
The story is being narrated by Hemachandran (Hemanth) to his two kids, just after he is back home from Germany. As a youngster, he was instantly smitten by the ample charms of a neighborhood girl Shyama (Srilekha). Love blossoms pretty soon, but the problem is that usually this girl can’t entertain the attention of a boy friend beyond a few days. And she does all these antics with the blessings of everyone at her home, including her grandfather (Nedumudi Venu), relatives and even domestic helps.
Soon Shyama learns that she is a bit too involved with the boy and the grandfather now approaches Hemachandran to move away from her. Why? As per some astrological reasons, if she ever gets married, the husband or the wife could be killed within six months! Hemachandran’s mother (played by yesteryear heroine Menaka) now appears and the love birds get married.
There is another sub plot happening in between , which has a maniacal junkie who has come all the way from Bangalore to rape and kill Shyama. If all these were not enough, a horror story ensues, with some ghost getting into Shyama’s body and some scenes modeled on the director’s classic filmManichithrathazhu being repeated there.
As the end titles start rolling after a grueling session where you cringe in the seats watching absurd scenes coming one after the other, the first thought would be, how can anyone even consider making this inane storyline into a film? Every department in the film (except for the music, to a certain extent) competes with the other in coming up with their worst shows.
The lead characters played by newcomers have little flesh on them. The lead pair and their two friends (Sreejith and Jinoop) look totally out of place and evidently uncomfortable in facing the camera. There is no point perhaps in blaming them as well, as they struggle to make an impact saying meaningless lines rendered in a serious way and old-fashioned scenes making things seriously boring.
Living Together is a total disappointment and a waste of time, to say the least. This is certainly a fall from grace for Fazil, who has made some invaluable gems in the past.
Verdict: Disappointing

Makeup Man(malayalam-2011)-movie review

Download Makeupman mp3 download from here

Director Shafi's Makeup Man narrates a story happening behind the camera, during the shooting of a film.
The tumultuous life of a couple, after the wife becomes a heroine just by chance and the husband is forced to disguise himself as her makeup man, is being told here.

Balu (Jayaram) is in dire straits after his event management company run into heavy losses. He has nowhere to go and just then Soorya (Sheela), who is madly in love with him, flees from home before her marriage. The lovebirds tie the knot with the help of a film production manager Kichu Manjaly (Suraj Venjarammoodu).

After some dramatic twists and turns, Soorya is chosen as the heroine in the film in which Kichu is working. The director changes her name to 'Anamika' and Balu remains with her, as her personal makeup man.

The basic storyline bears similarity to several films from the past, like Ram Gopal Varma's Rangeela, for instance. There are some nice moments in between but mostly, the story goes along on highly predictable lines and in a disturbingly slow pace.

Kunchacko Boban and Prithviraj appear doing cameo roles, without making much of an impact to the story. With a rather ordinary script, the film develops in the absence of a definite direction or focus. The actors involved seem to be disinterested in the proceedings after a while. The visuals by Azhagappan are fine but the music by Vidyasagar doesn't help things a bit.

Jayaram repeats his usual style perhaps as he has nothing much to do and the heroine Sheela, is just about okay. Suraj Venjarammoodu is fine during the initial scenes but the humorous scenes look stale after a while. Siddique looks good as a film-director. Salim Kumar and Jagathy Sreekumar are okay but Jagadeesh's stammering act as a lawyer towards the end is plain boring.

Makeup Man has nothing great to offer for the viewers. If your idea of entertainment is limited to those lines, well, it could turn out to be a watchable fare at best.

Verdict: Average

Utt Pataang-Hindi movie (Feb 5 2011) Review

The year 2010 gave us some superb small films which in turn were responsible to raise my expectations from UTT PATAANG. Moreover its talented star cast lead by Vinay Pathak (in double role), Saurabh Shukla, Mona Singh, Mahie Gill and Sanjay Mishra was enough to excite offbeat movie lovers like myself to a large extent. In all a first time attempt by director Srikanth V. Velagaleti showed some great promise even without any noticeable promotions before its release.
But unfortunately this time we don’t get a polished gem in the disguise of a small film as seen in the previous year. Despite of having a talented cast ensemble and interesting script UTT PATAANG only manages to impress its viewers in parts and fails to emerge as a winner all together. Rightly made as a song less film with a short duration, the film does hold your attention in some particular sequences but overall it cannot be called as a thoroughly entertaining thriller cum comedy.
Revolving around a one night storyline written around a bag full of money, the film talks about only few people and their mutual interaction, showcasing the elements of lust, love, greed and crime in their contrasting characters. Incidentally we have seen many movies in the past written around a bag full of money like Ek Chalis Ki Local, Sankat City, Emotional Atyachaar and more. Ignoring this fact the major problem in UTT PATAANG comes in the first 15 minutes itself where the proceedings are pretty slow and uninteresting which really put you off. In other words, its takes too much time to sink in which does bring in some kind of restlessness in the viewers. But once all the characters and their individual link ups are clear, the film starts entertaining but that too in only bits and parts.

To be precise, all the confusions created in the first half get cleared post intermission. But the second half has another big problem of over-acting by the veteran actor Vinay Pathak in his double role of a Gangster loving French style and language. As I see it, his all one liner gags, histrionics and dialogues with French accent fall flat completely and do not entertain. In fact, I strongly feel that if conceived in a different and better manner, this double role of Vinay could have easily been the major highlight of the film post interval. In this second part though the story moves pretty fast but still the life saving entertaining moments only come towards the climax where another corrupt police officer enters to taste the part of the cake. Truly speaking the final moments once again save the movie and you don’t get up from your seat completely disheartened.
So overall it’s a very bumpy ride with steep lows and not so big highs. No doubt the script is written thoughtfully by Saurabh Shukla and Srikanth, focusing on many interlinked sequences which get repeated from different perspective of a new character each time. But in my opinion this particular style of story-telling is now becoming over-used, especially in such small budget experimental movies. Last time I remember seeing the same kind of scripting in “Emotional Atyachaar” which was also released last year. Anyway, in the cinematography department the film gets the right feel as required accompanied by a complimenting background score by Sanjoy Chowdhary.
Performance wise, Vinay Pathak does both good as well as bad in this movie. As a simple common man he is great as usual but as a French obsessed Gangster he does it a little over and fails to entertain. Saurabh Shukla as his detective friend is superb but again he is getting typed in these kind of roles seen in several films. Mona Singh in his limited scope does well. But Mahie Gill sizzles on the screen in all her revealing dresses like a hot sexy-siren in the role of a con-woman. Though she hasn’t got much to do other than giving uncaring looks and stares, but still she looks stunning and surprises a lot after her last small cameo in DABANGG. And the girl really deserves much better roles to prove her inner talent. In the rest of the cast Sanjay Mishra gets wasted whereas Delnaaz Paul, Murli Sharma and Brijendra Kala are strictly routine
All together, UTT PATAANG can only partly impress the viewers who like to watch offbeat thriller films made in this particular style. But for the rest, it might be synonym to its title i.e. UTT PATAANG.

Rating : 2 / 5
